Fact Tuesday: Autumnal Equinox

By Saskatchewan Science Centre on 27-Sep-09 12:58
This is the first regular feature of this blog: Fact Tuesday! Each Tuesday I will post a quick little science fact.
It’s Fact Tuesday. Today’s fact is about today, in fact.
Today is the autumnal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere of the Earth. This is the classical name of what is occurring today — that the Earth’s axis is tilted neither towards nor away from the sun. Some people prefer to say that it’s the September equinox, though, because while it’s the beginning of autumn here in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s actually the beginning of spring for those in the Southern Hemisphere!
Are you happy that autumn is here? Do you have a favourite part about autumn?
(Also, nobody has answered the question I posed in this entry, which means nobody has won the tickets to an IMAX film! Here’s a hint: the guy dressed up probably has a pretty phenomenal view of the sun today!)
Stay curious,
Collette
