Art and science
Art and science go really nicely together, and I'm happy to say we've been able to bring them together a few times lately.
On Saturday, March 6 we will be at the Dunlop Art Gallery at the Sherwood Village Branch of the Regina Public Library to help out with Germination Nation Day. We will be taking a whole bunch of microscopes out there to show you what seeds look like close up. We are involved with a whole day of activities in fact, and you can read the details at www.dunlopartgallery.org. We are actually closed that day so that we can get ready for Fantasy Food, our annual fundraising event. So, it will be a great day for you to head on over to the library!
Our newest IMAX film is Van Gogh: Brush with Genius, and to celebrate we are putting together a juried art show. Kids from Kindergarten through Grade 12 can enter now. All they have to do is create a 2D piece of art based on a scientific principle, take a photo, and send it in. Details are at The Scientific Art Show. It's a pretty big honour to be chosen for an art show, and for the reception we are planning to invite some local artists so that kids can get to know them and ask questions.
Lastly, this is a fun and interesting way to bring art and science together. We were given a piece by artist Seema Goel, which is now displayed near our climbing wall. I love it! I think it's both really funny, and really thought provoking. It's called Happy Birthday DNA. It's a piece that was created to celebrate the 52nd anniversary of the discovery of DNA. It features a whole bunch of taxidermied lab mice singing happy birthday. I am guessing it's 52 mice, but I haven't counted.
Here is the artist statement (click on it to see a larger size)
And here is the piece on our wall. (Above it we added some extra text and photo panels documenting other discoveries as well.)
And I even took a little video for you!
Stay curious,
Collette
