Fun day at the Science Centre

Yesterday was a pretty neat day here at the Science Centre. CBC Television was here, the giant ear was being painted, the Popcorn Show was performed in-house on a rare occasion, and an entire village fit on a desk!
A few days ago someone from CBC contacted me and asked if they could film some stuff on our climbing wall. Absolutely! It's for a children's show on French CBC. I took a few photos as I hung around waiting to see if I could be helpful in any way.
Here they are beginning. She is talking about taking risks. (Even though the climbing wall isn't risky, it can definitely be scary especially if you are nervous about heights.)
Here is a better shot where you can see the host, the cameraman, the producer/director, and Keir -- our Sports Scientist and climbing wall expert.
This is around the time that I was asked to go turn off the Beakman's World shows that we have playing on our third floor. They are loud and you can hear them down in the climbing area. While doing that I ran into Alexis and Dan painting the inside of the giant ear!
I blogged about that ear not too long ago. They're definitely making progress. For a while the outer ear was off and just leaning against a different wall so they could create where it attaches to the wall. Looks like it will be ready for the public soon!
After I had Beakman's World turned off and made silly jokes with Alexis and Dan about the ear (your hearing is not improved when you stand inside a giant ear, apparently), I noticed an unexpected stage show going on.
Now it doesn't look like anything unusual to the casual visitor, but the person doing the show is Jessica and she's an Outreach Explorer. This means that she does stage shows all the time, but rarely in our building. She's usually out on the road. She's also performing the Popcorn Show, which is an outreach show. It was probably one of the first times it was ever performed at the Science Centre, which is kinda neat. On the right you can see two brand new Outreach Explorers Ashley (in the orange) and Alana (right beside her). Continuing along that bottom row is Science Explorer Gina and Science Explorer Megan (who is brand new as well! She's been here just a couple of days, although she worked here previously. Don't you love it when former employees come back?). The next row up you can see starting from the bottom John -- our Director of Exhibits and Programming, Sandy -- our Executive Director, and Science Explorer Shayna.
Yesterday was actually Jessica's last day of work for a while. She's leaving to have a baby! We are sad to see her go, but excited for her new adventure. We are also looking forward to when she brings the new one around so we can all get in some newborn baby snuggles!
I didn't actually ask why Jessica was performing the show here, but I am guessing she was both teaching the new Science and Outreach Explorers, and the rest were simply enjoying the show and being encouraging.
So, after I got all of that stuff turned off, I checked back in with CBC. Annick, the host, had made her way up the wall by then.
By that time it was clear that everything was in place and I didn't need to hang around offering help anymore, so I wandered back towards my desk. On the way I ended up in the programming area and came upon this delicious masterpiece!
It was made by our Exhibit Floor Coordinator Nicole! It took all my might to not eat that ribbon candy she used. My favourite! I loved that she even had the Science Centre in there. SSC on the building on the left is for Saskatchewan Science Centre.
I just realized that the village is out in the main administration area and that people have been picking at it all day. I am going to go see what's left! I love ribbon candy.
Stay curious,
Collette
