Medieval madness and magic

March is Medieval Science Month here, so last week I went around and took a few photographs of the happenings.

Among other decorations found throughout the Science Centre, the first thing you see when you get past the front desk are two turrets! Here is one. It's ready for you to colour:

These info panels are pretty neat.

These were my two favourite things to learn:

Germ warfare

Toilet paper

We have a craft area set up so that kids and un-kids (aka adults) can make their own Coat of Arms or Woodblock book:

I particularly like our Coat of Arms (you may need to click on the photo to read everything properly)

I missed the first part of the Alchemy Stage Show so I'm going to have to take it in another time, but here is Science Explorer Megan telling us about how a lot of science back then was considered magic, but really it was just basic chemistry. She turned this beaker's contents from white to blue and then to orange. Magic! Um, I mean, science!

Another part of Medieval Science Month that I've enjoyed a lot has been watching Sir Chad and Lord Glazier teach their workshops wearing their medieval garb. Here they are pondering a siege with their trebuchet:

Contemplating the next siege

(Lord Glazier is the one with the cheeky smile on his face. A truly dark heart that one has, to be sure.)

After little prompting, these two explained to me and a small crowd the whys and hows of the trebuchet, our siege weapon of choice at the Saskatchewan Science Centre. Check out this little video:

A science fair was happening last week and some of the particpants came by to check out the Science Centre. They helped with the trebuchet countdown:

The day ended with Sir Chad and Lord Glazier congratulating each other on a siege well done:

Congratulations on a well performed siege

There is one week left in Medieval Science Month, including the Grand Finale this Saturday. The part that I'm most excited about? A reenactment group from Yorkton will be coming in to do two combat reenactments! And they'll be around all day doing a living history scene of daily life that you can interact with. Also, Vikings: Journey to New Worlds will be coming out of the archive and will play at the Kramer IMAX Theatre all week, plus three times on Saturday. There is more stuff going on too, so check out the schedule.

Stay curious,
Collette
