Sombre Anniversary

It's been five years since Hurricane Katrina. And randomly, I assure you, we happen to be playing Hurricane on the Bayou at the Kramer IMAX Theatre. We actually decided to play it because of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico; we thought it was timely. I hadn't really thought about hurricane season being upon us now, and that such a significant anniversary was coming up.

Five years! It doesn't seem like that long ago to me. We all remember those vivid images, don't we?

There is a lot of interesting new stuff to read about Hurricane Katrina and the aftermath using a little search with Google News if you'd like to have a look. The internet is abuzz, and for good reason. It was the costliest natural disaster in United States history, plus one of the five deadliest hurricanes for the USA including their deadliest since 1928.

And as I mentioned, you can also check out Hurricane on the Bayou here at the Kramer IMAX Theatre. It's only playing until September 12, so you don't have much time if you have interest. The amazing story behind this film is that the filmmaker had begun to do a story about how destruction of the wetlands in Louisiana was causing some serious problems. He knew the wetlands act as a sort of speed bump to hurricanes, and if a big enough hurricane were to hit, New Orleans could be destroyed. They even filmed some hypothetical events, such as people being rescued from New Orleans rooftops. They never used those made up scenes, because they ended up having the real thing. It was during filming that Hurricane Katrina hit. IMAX cameras were there while the whole thing happened! The behind the scenes story is so incredible; read all about it on the film's website.
