Family friendly 2pm activities

Drop in on weekends at 2pm for these free* activities:

March 2pm Family Activities

Walk into the Saskatchewan Science Centre during the month of March and be transported back to medieval times during Medieval Science Month. All month we'll be building K'NEX creations from the medieval era. Each week there will be a challenge, and those who complete the challenge will be entered to win free admission to an IMAX film the day of our Medieval Grand Finale event!

March 13 & 14 - Trebuchet Time

The trebuchet was used in medieval times to break down the stronghold of a castle. Trebuchets use potential and kinetic energy to send projectiles at targets such as castle walls. This week, make a trebuchet and test out its launching power. If your trebuchet can use gravitational potential energy to launch an object, you will be entered to win entrance to an IMAX film the day of the final medieval event of the month.

March 20 & 21- Siege Tower Take Over!

Siege Towers were created to protect assailants as they lay siege to defensive walls. These tall towers had to be sturdy enough to withstand linear motion and not topple over as they were pushed into place. This week’s trial is to create a siege tower, minimum 15 inches tall, that can be pushed at least 3 feet without toppling over. If your siege tower completes this task you will be entered into a draw for IMAX tickets to be used the day of our Medieval Grand Finale event!

March 27 & 28 - Catapult Catastrophe

Before the time of explosives, people in the medieval era used catapults to destroy the walls and buildings that got in their way. The catapult uses stored up elastic potential energy to hurl objects into the air and land a surprising distance away. The challenge of the week is to construct a catapult that can toss an object a distance of 2 feet. Any team that can complete this challenge is entered into a draw to watch an IMAX film.

* activities are free, but regular admission fees to the Saskatchewan Science Centre still apply.

For the whole family

Sometimes it's a craft or a game, and sometimes it's more experiment or exploration, but either way our 2pm activities are a fun way for the entire family to get hands-on with science.

Fun Fact

banana leaf

Banana trees aren’t really trees at all because their stems do not contain woody tissue. They’re actually herbaceous plants or ‘herbs.’
