April is Earth Month - presented by The Co-operators

1

Celebrated every April 22, Earth Day is the largest, most celebrated environmental event worldwide. In April we will celebrate everything about our earth – how we live on it, what else lives on it and how, and what everybody can do to take care of it – now and for the future.

This is what we did in 2011. Details on 2012 coming soon!

For the public:

  • Feature Stage Shows Superheroes of Sustainability and Scales and Tails will be presented daily
  • A giant colouring wall (pictured above)
  • All Family Friendly 2pm Activities will feature the environment
  • Environmental videos created by Saskatchewan students showing daily in the small theatre
  • Earth month facts all over the Science Centre for visitor scavenger hunts
  • Animal presentations – a unique chance to meet and learn about endangered and extirpated local species.
  • World wide opening of Born to be Wild 3D IMAX film!

Plus:

Bird and Aquatic Creature Identification Cards

Come by during the month of April and pick up identification cards of the birds and aquatic creatures of Wascana Marsh and Bird Sanctuary. Cards will be located near the bird viewing station in WILD! Saskatchewan. Made possible through a partnership with Friends of Wascana Marsh and Wascana Centre Authority.

Nature Walks: April 22 to May 1 at 2:30pm

Enjoy a walk around Wascana Centre and take in the wonderful spring air.  Learn about the avian species that reside in the park and the importance of our urban forest. Sign up will be required at the front desk. Walks will be approximately 30 minutes and begin at 2:30 p.m..

For educators and their students:

Show off your environmental awesomeness and win $250!

Do you have an Environmental Club? Partner with your community for projects? Is your vermicomposting bin full of worms? Show us and win!

  1. Create a video with your class highlighting your environmental awesomeness and send it to us.
  2. We’ll put all of the projects on a DVD that will play in our small theatre during Earth Month in April.
  3. Three classes will be chosen to come to the Science Centre for free in April, plus they’ll also receive $250 from The Co-operators to put towards their environmental awesomeness!

This pilot project is open to Regina and Prairie Valley School Division schools only. Make it a success and next year could be bigger! Deadline to submit videos: March 28. Videos can be submitted by mailing a flash drive, CD, or DVD with a movie file on it (.wmv, .avi, .mpg, .mpeg, .mov, .ram, .rm). Higher quality files work best! Mail it to the Saskatchewan Science Centre, c/o Sheila Beaubien, 2903 Powerhouse Drive, Regina SK S4N 0A1. Questions? Call Sheila at 570-5682.

In 1889 Thomas Edison invented the kinetograph, a camera using rolls of coated celluloid film, and the Kinetoscope, a device for viewing a sequence of photographs - an early movie camera and
viewer!
