Disinformation in the Digital Age: Who Is Shaping What We Believe?
Wednesday, November 18 | 9:30 am
Disinformation is nothing new, but social media and artificial intelligence have changed how quickly misleading information can spread and how effectively it can shape what we think. From foreign governments seeking to influence public opinion to online communities amplifying conspiracy theories, disinformation is playing an increasingly significant role in how we understand the world around us.
Join us for the next Science Connections as we explore this timely topic with Dr. Brian McQuinn, humanitarian, academic, and expert in conflict-affected regions around the world.
Dr. McQuinn’s work has spanned more than two decades, from supporting peace talks in Nepal and Timor-Leste to engaging with armed groups in South Sudan and Nigeria. He earned his doctorate from the University of Oxford in 2015, with fieldwork that included nine months of ethnographic research with armed groups involved in Libya’s 2011 uprising.
Drawing on his experience, Dr. McQuinn will help us explore the complex world of disinformation and consider how it influences our understanding of events, ideas, and the world around us.
Participants will enjoy a 45-minute presentation, followed by time for questions, discussion, and reflection in a relaxed, welcoming environment. As with all Science Connections sessions, the morning also includes time to explore the Science Centre’s exhibit floor, and complimentary coffee and snacks courtesy of Heartland Senior Consulting.
This session is designed to be informative, engaging, and confidence-building – perfect for curious minds interested in science, energy, and the future of innovation.
