JoyLab is a collection of curated experiences designed to provide Instagram-ready moments for visitors while discovering how simple things (such as bubbles or rainbows) can bring joy. The JoyLab was inspired by the book and TED Talk by Ingrid Fetell Lee, Joyful: The Surprising Power of Ordinary Things to Create Extraordinary Happiness, that draws on insights from neuroscience and psychology in exploring how the world around us can influence our lives. In her book Joyful, Fetell Lee identified ten aesthetics of joy each of which reveals a distinct connection between the feeling of joy and tangible qualities of the world around us: energy, abundance, freedom, harmony, play, surprise, transcendence, magic, celebration, and renewal. The self-guided experience encourages visitors to explore questions about joy and happiness, perhaps sparking a conversation about how seemingly mundane spaces and objects we interact with every day effect our mood, or considering whether our obsession with taking selfies is empowering or narcissistic? The exhibition also serves as a backdrop for creating dialogue on topics such as the science of happiness, mindfulness, and mental wellness.
